Breach at PayPal Subsidiary Affects 1.6 Million Customers

PayPal informed customers on Friday that personal information for 1.6 million individuals may have been obtained by hackers who breached the systems of its subsidiary TIO Networks. TIO is a publicly traded bill payment processor that PayPal acquired in July 2017 for roughly $230 million. The company is based in Canada and it serves some of the largest telecom and utility network operators in North America. TIO has more than 10,000 supported billers and it serves 16 million consumer bill pay accounts.

On November 10, PayPal announced that TIO had suspended operations in an effort to protect customers following the discovery of security vulnerabilities on the subsidiary's platform. PayPal said it had found issues with TIO’s data security program that did not adhere to its own standards.

An investigation conducted in collaboration with third-party cybersecurity experts revealed that TIO’s network had been breached, including servers that stored the information of TIO clients and customers of TIO billers. PayPal said the attackers may have obtained personally identifiable information (PII) for roughly 1.6 million customers.

Affected companies and individuals will be contacted via mail and email, and offered free credit monitoring services via Experian.

While it’s unclear exactly what type of data the hackers have gained access to, the information shared by PayPal and TIO suggests that payment card data and in some cases even social security numbers (SSNs) may have been compromised.

PayPal has highlighted that TIO’s systems have not been integrated into its own platform. “The PayPal platform is not impacted in any way, as the TIO systems are completely separate from the PayPal network, and PayPal’s customers’ data remains secure,” the company said.

The New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS), an agency responsible for regulating financial services and products, has also issued a statement on the incident.

“DFS is working with our regulated entity, PayPal, to investigate and address issues related to cybersecurity vulnerabilities identified at PayPal’s subsidiary, TIO Networks,” the DFS said. “We applaud PayPal’s rapid response to the matter, which put consumers and business clients first, and we appreciate their efforts to inform DFS, as required, in a timely manner. Events like these illustrate the necessity of DFS’s landmark cybersecurity regulation and underscore the strength and effectiveness of our strong state-based financial services regulatory framework, including for the fintech industry.”

TIO said services will not be fully restored until it’s confident that its systems and network are secure.

The Rising Dangers of Unsecured IoT Technology

As government regulation looms, the security industry must take a leading role in determining whether the convenience of the Internet of Things is worth the risk and compromise of unsecured devices.

Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled 450,000 pacemakers that are currently in use by patients out of fear that these devices could be compromised. Although the agency said there is not any reported patient harm related to the devices, the FDA is rightly concerned that attackers will exploit pacemaker vulnerabilities and have the ability to affect how a medical device works.

While this is perhaps one of the most potentially life-threatening examples of unsecured Internet of Things (IoT) security, it drives home the point that manufacturers are not building these devices with security as a priority. As IoT devices grow in popularity, seemingly endless security- and privacy-related concerns are surfacing.

IoT Malware: Alive and Well With more than 20 billion devices expected to be connected to the Internet over the next few years, it comes as no surprise that attackers are increasingly looking to exploit them. Large-scale events like last October's distributed denial-of-service attack targeting systems operated by Dyn, and warnings from security experts should have security professionals paying attention. But are they?

According to a recent Gartner report, by 2020, IoT technology will be in 95% of new electronic product designs. While this statistic demonstrates the success of IoT, it is also a precursor for alarm. As the adoption of IoT devices rises, manufacturers are competing to stay ahead. Creating cheap products quickly often means overlooking security and privacy measures.

In general, consumers need to have more control over privacy and how they use IoT devices (think of the pacemaker). Watches and other wearables, for instance, are good examples of devices that give consumers control. Users can turn them off, take them off, and customize them. However, other devices, such as your personal home assistant can, theoretically, always be listening, as when, according to a CNET report, a hostage victim was able to contact law enforcement through their Amazon Alexa device, despite the fact that Amazon says the technology doesn't support "wake-up" action calls to outside phone lines.

National Security Issue? The IoT Cybersecurity Act was introduced recently as an initiative designed to set security standards for the US government's purchase of IoT devices. In order to steer clear of stifling innovation, the government doesn't often insert itself into private sector manufacturing decisions. However, the proposed legislation signals that, at least in some quarters, IoT security is becoming a matter of national security. And, although this bill does not pertain to consumers, it is a step in the right direction by challenging manufacturers to prioritize IoT security and privacy in their engineering designs, and consumers, in their purchasing decisions.

At the end of the day, as consumers continue to embrace IoT technology, they should not have to sacrifice security and privacy for the convenience and enjoyment of a product and service. Instead, they should be able to decide how they use "things" and how they can control them. Until security and privacy measures are embedded in all devices, those of us in the security industry need to challenge ourselves by questioning whether the convenience is worth the risk and compromise of unsecured devices.

Nearly 2/3 of Industrial Companies Lack Security Monitoring

New Honeywell survey shows more than half of industrial sector organizations have suffered cyberattacks.

A new survey by LNS Research on behalf of Honeywell shows that industrial sector networks are still playing catch-up in cybersecurity.

While more than half of the 130 decision-makers from industrial organizations in the survey say they work in a facility that has suffered a breach, just 37% of the respondents say their organizations monitor networks for suspicious activity and traffic.

Nearly half, 45%, say they don't have an enterprise leader for cybersecurity, and one-fifth are not employing risk assessments on a regular basis.

"Decision-makers are more aware of threats and some progress has been made to address them, but this report reinforces that cybersecurity fundamentals haven’t been adopted by a significant portion of the industrial community," Jeff Zindel, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Industrial Cyber Security said in a statement.

Make Your Outlook Email Signature Stand Out

Just like with a note or letter, a written communication should include a signature. Now that so much has gone digital, emails have become a common way to communicate, for both business and pleasure. And, a signature at the end of your message can make all the difference. This is especially important in the business world.

We’ve previously explained the benefits of email signatures, including openness to communicate and professionalism as well as providing a networking and promotional tool. All of this can be done with a simple signature that includes your name and contact information, and optionally, your website and business address. A signature tells you something about a personality. Just as two people hardly write alike, they also sign differently.

This being said, if you use Outlook for your emails then creating a signature is super easy. It does not take much time, offers flexibility, and can provide you with multiple signatures for business and personal communications.

How to Add a Signature in Outlook

If you are unsure how to create a signature in Outlook, you must first access the setup screen. You can open this area in two different ways in the Outlook desktop application.

  • The first method is to click File > Options > Mail. You should see the option for Signatures and just hit that button.

  • The second way to access the setup window is on the email composition screen. Select the Insert tab, the Signatures dropdown box, and pick Signatures.

How to Create a Signature

To begin with your first signature creation, make sure that you are on the E-mail Signature tab in the setup window. Then, select the email account you want to use on the right, if you have more than one address set up. Remember, you can create multiple signatures for multiple accounts.

Click New, which should be the only accessible button if there are no other signatures yet.

Next, you will need to give your signature a name. This is as important as it is handy if you plan to set up more than one signature. For instance, you may choose to have different signatures for new messages and replies or for in-office and out-of-office messages. So, try to use a meaningful name that you will recognize at a glance.

How to Format a Signature

Now comes the fun part, creating a standout email signature in the text editor. Of course, you can keep it simple by just inserting your name and contact information. But you can use the tools available to change the font style and size, format the text, change its color, and align it to the left, right, or center. Maybe the font size is too small, for example when you reply to an email.

If you want to make those adjustments, you can use the tools before typing your signature or after. Let’s start by clicking inside of the Email Signature text box and typing your signature to make the changes afterward. Then, we will look at the other options to insert a business card, image, or link.

For changing text in the signature after you type it, just select the text and make changes to the font style, size, formatting, or color. For example, maybe you would like your name to appear larger and in an elegant font. Or perhaps you would like your business name and phone number to display in your company colors.

One nice feature of creating your signature in the Outlook desktop is that if you want to add a link to a website, the application does it for you automatically. For instance, if you begin typing “www.” and then the rest of the URL, when you hit the Enter key, the text is linked to the site for you.

Alternatively, you can link the text yourself and use different language with the Hyperlink button. This allows you to compose any text you like and link it. As an example, you may want your company name to appear as it is but link it to the company’s website.

To do this, select the text and click the Hyperlink button at the top of the editor. Under Link To make sure that Existing File or Web Page is selected, confirm the text to display at the top, and then enter the URL at the bottom, in the Address field. Click OK and you’re set.

You will notice that you can also link to an email in that same box, which is another handy way to format your email address. You can even include a subject line so that you know the message is from a user who clicked your address in the email. Just note, the user can likely adjust that subject line with their own application.

Another great way to make your signature stand out is by inserting an image. The most common use for this is for your company logo. And many businesses actually require their logo to be in your signature. Either way, adding this is just as easy as adding a link.

Move your cursor to the spot in your signature where you want the image and click the Image button. Browse for your file in the popup window, select it, and hit Insert. That’s it, your image is then inserted into your signature.

If you realize after inserting the image that it could use some formatting, you can do this too. Just double-click on the image to open the formatting window. Then, you can adjust the size or colors and lines, as well as enter alternate text and crop the image.

Another terrific way to format an image in your signature is to link it. This way, your recipient can just click the logo and head right to your company website. To do this, add the image and insert the link with the above steps.

While maybe not as common as the other formatting tools, the option to add a business card is available. Just put your cursor where you want it, click the Business Card button, select the location in the Look in dropdown box, and click OK.

If you have a business card saved that includes your name, job title, and company name, this is a convenient way to add those details quickly.

How to Configure a Signature

One final piece after you create your signature is to decide when it should be used. You have already chosen the email address to attach it to, but there is more. You can use the signature for new messages, replies and forwards, or both. And, you can create different ones for each. Use different signatures for different situations in Outlook to create the right impression.

For instance, if you have a signature that includes much detail along with your name, you might not want all of that included when you are simply replying or forwarding an email to someone. At that time, you may just want a simple “thank you” along with your first name instead.

So, you would keep the name of your new email signature in the New messages area and then create another new signature and select its name in the Replies/forwards box. Keep in mind that these choices will be inserted into your emails by default but can be changed in the email before you send it.

How to Use a Different Signature

Now that you have your default signatures set, you do not have to worry about inserting them when you compose, reply, or forward a message. But, what if you want to use a different signature in that particular email?

In the new message window, click the Insert tab. Then, select the Signatures dropdown box and pick the signature you want to use. You will then see your choice pop right into your email replacing the default.

How to Change a Signature in Outlook

You may have all of your signatures set up now, but realize you need to make a change. How do you edit an existing signature? This is just as simple as creating one.

Once again, access the signature set up window by clicking File > Options > Mail. Or on the email composition screen, select the Insert tab, the Signatures drop-down box, and pick Signatures.

Then, pick the name of the signature in the Select signature to edit box. Make your changes within the editor and then click Save. You can also rename your signature from this area too if needed. Click Rename, give it a new name, and click Save.

You may be in a situation where your company has strict rules for email signatures and formatting. Or perhaps you just prefer to keep your signatures simple for professional reasons. But email signatures are not just for business and with the tools Outlook offers, you can make your personal emails fun and creative.

Here are just a few suggestions.

Add some holiday cheer to emails you send to friends and family. You can pop in a cute holiday image, add a cheerful closing, and spruce up your signature with festive colors.

How to Extend your Laptop Battery Life

These days, we get a lot of our work done on laptops, which means battery life is a huge priority for any laptop user. Wouldn’t it be good, then, to learn how to prolong the life of your laptop battery? Here are a few useful tips to do just that.

Some truths about your laptop battery

Batteries in many devices nowadays are lithium-based -- either lithium-ion or lithium-polymer -- so users must take note of the following guidelines for their proper maintenance:

  • They can’t be overcharged, even though you leave your battery plugged in for a long period of time. When the battery hits 100%, it’ll stop charging.
  • Leaving your battery completely drained will damage it.
  • Batteries have limited lifespans. So no matter what you do, yours will age from the very first time you charge it. This is because as time passes, the ions will no longer be able to flow efficiently from the anode to the cathode, thereby reducing its capacity.

What else can degrade your battery

Besides its being naturally prone to deterioration, your battery can degrade due to higher-than-normal voltages, which happens when you keep your battery fully charged at all times. Even though a modern laptop battery cannot be overcharged, doing so will add a stress factor that’ll harm your battery.

Both extremely high temperatures (above 70°F) and low temperatures (between 32-41°F) can also reduce battery capacity and damage its components. The same goes for storing a battery for long periods of time, which can lead to the state of extreme discharge. Another factor is physical damage. Remember that batteries are made up of sensitive materials, and physical collision can damage them.

How to prolong your battery life

Now that you know some facts about your laptop battery, it's time to learn how to delay its demise:

  • Never leave your battery completely drained.
  • Don’t expose your battery to extremely high or low temperatures.
  • If possible, charge your battery at a lower voltage.
  • If you need to use your laptop for a long period of time while plugged into a power source, it’s better to remove the battery. This is because a plugged-in laptop generates more heat which will damage your battery.
  • When you need to store your battery for a few weeks, you should recharge your battery to 40% and remove it from your laptop for storage.

These are just a few tips on extending the life of your hardware. There are many more ways you can maximize your hardware efficiency and extend its longevity.
